Did you know: Friends in the garden
Bees
Bees are furry flying insects that make a buzzing sound. Most bees are black and yellow. Bees are important in our gardens as they help pollinate plants and flowers and of course they make yummy honey. But be careful of bees, because they can sting if they get upset - remember to keep your shoes on if you have bees on your lawn. Check out what it's like to be a bee in 'Bee movie'.
Butterflies and Caterpillars
Caterpillars are furry insects with many legs that live in our garden. caterpillars are very hungry insects that eat plant leaves so they can build cocoons and chrysalids. The amazing thing about caterpillars is that they turn into beautiful butterflies and moths. Butterflies are among the most popular insects in the world because they are so beautiful. A good story about caterpillars is 'The very hungry caterpillar' by Eric Carle
Spiders
Unlike the other garden critters, spiders are not insects, they are arachnids. They have 8 legs and come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Spiders are important in our gardens to keep pests away. At night time you might notice a spider spinning a beautiful web. This is how a spider catches it's food. Spider webs and spiders may be interesting to look at, but you must never touch a spider as they can be very dangerous. A great movie and classic book about a spider is 'Charlotte's Web'.
